As usual every year, the CVE Details site offers its annual list of most vulnerable applications and operating systems fifty. In the Edition 2016 there was a clear winner and by a margin substantial: Android. Google’s operating system registered 523 vulnerabilities, surpassing Debian, Ubuntu Linux, and even Flash Player.
Android is a mobile operating system used in the world and has never enjoyed a good reputation in terms of safety. It was not until recent times – thanks to Stagefright – that companies began to worry more about to launch updates. With Google at the forefront, other manufacturers have released patches to plug holes that expose the user to greater dangers.
In his defense, there are some factors to consider. The count includes vulnerabilities exposed during the year, i.e., that are made public. It is possible that other products such as Linux, Mac OS X or the Adobe software have vulnerabilities that continue to exploit without that users realize. Of the same mode not all the vulnerabilities have the same level of aggressiveness.
In the case of Apple things were not so fatal as by 2015, because after taking the first two places in vulnerabilities that year, now fell to the eleventh and fifteenth position with Mac OS X and iOS, respectively.
In the group count by companies, Microsoft continues leading the list with 1325 vulnerabilities product of its operating systems and browsers. Followed by Adobe with 1383, with 695 Google and Apple with 611.
