Review Lenovo Yoga 3 Tab Pro [FW Labs]

Difficult today is for any manufacturer of tablets to differentiate with a new device. So much that few are brands that take something really novel or whose models have an impact similar to its counterpart in version phone tablets, were even more than phones, perhaps standardized.

In that effort, Lenovo presents its Yoga Tab 3 Pro that is as a tablet anyone except a small great novelty: includes a projector of images in its base.

Focused on multimedia

Starting, the idea of putting a spotlight on a tablet gives it a clear approach to the media. Because the tablet as such isn’t anything special or groundbreaking in terms of its performance – already go on it – but the possibility to mount it on a table and project that Netflix movie to a wall it is an idea that in the paper and the execution is not nothing wrong.

The projector allows for up to 480 p resolution and 50 Lumens, although in numbers that can seem much for a room dark enough is not good enough. The point important to not forget: the projector is inside the base of the tablet.

But what would the picture on the wall without a typical sound of a tablet system? Little, very little. Fortunately, Lenovo included him the tablet a set of four JBL speakers with Dolby Atmos, which although they do not have neither the quality nor the power of a dedicated sound system, yes heard much better than the average tablet speaker. First, because the power is enough thinking about using them in a closed environment (nobody wants to watch a movie with people around making noise) and because the sound quality is pretty good. This was easily verifiable by searching on YouTube some well “tarrera” music and easily perceive the sound of the drum of the battery with one quality more than acceptable.

In summary, in the environment of multimedia playback Tab 3-Yoga works well. Projector, as a logical matter, has no general quality of a dedicated appliance, but if someone wants to use it from the caretaker to the wall (if only white) room, will have no trouble quietly see Stranger Things loud. That I did during a full weekend and the experience was overall very satisfactory.

Weak point: performance

While Yoga Tab 3 Pro brings decent specifications and its construction is rather sober and firm at the same time, the truth is that the performance of the device performing basic operations for a tablet (or mid range phone) it enough leaves to be desired.

Running with Android 5.1.1 over the layer of customization of Lenovo, the experience of user “traditional” not is completely happy. Browse various tabs in Chrome at the same time or switch between applications always involves some delay and little responsiveness to the touches of the screen. Even with a reboot of the appliance factory starting everything from scratch with few applications, typically always have those annoying typical mini a bit optimized Android crashes and was running with a team that definitely falls short on RAM memory.

And for my that is the great Achilles heel of this appliance. Because ever going to buy a tablet just to see movies during a full weekend, but also to take advantage of other tasks. And if something as simple as browsing the internet is a little fluid experience, which is then to other heavier things in general.

After nearly a week, Yoga Tab 3 Pro was on the table at night with Netflix always ready for use; for any other activity, I ended up using the phone or an old iPad Mini 2nd Gen, which only can with iOS 9 but that is still much more fluid to use for trivial things (read: surf the internet, social networks, etc).

Good idea, do not so good workmanship?

As well I mentioned before, a tablet focused on the reproduction of content seems a good novelty in a world where the tablets have been short on innovation, but to make a difference has to be a plus. In the case of the Yoga Tab 3 Pro, is understandable that the projector is a little limited or the duration of the battery with the on projector may be to throw rockets (as much, the 3-hour, although without problems, it gives more than one day of autonomy without using the projector), but what is not understood nor justified – considering its price – is that for most normal things the team is short.

And is that therein lies the main ‘but’ of Yoga Tab 3 Pro: is an expensive team whose performance is not fully optimal. In Chile round the CLP $399,000 (USD $594) and even though that price could be understood because “it includes a projector,” that cost too much to justify it when the rest of features do not accompany.

Probably in the future the same Lenovo or other manufacturers nº41 on idea and den with a similar, but more rounded product. And it is that very novelty that is the projector, if the tablet walk pulls in tasks that any mid-range phone without problems, the user experience suffers too.
